Frequently Asked Questions

How much fabric do I need?

All our fabric pages show widths and pattern repeats which any good curtain/blind maker or upholsterer will be able to calculate quantities from. However if you need some help please get in touch, we’d be happy to help.

How accurate are your pictures?

Every effort is made to ensure our photos are as accurate as possible but please request a sample before ordering if you are concerned about matching the colour. It is impossible to truly represent fabric colours on screen.

Can you make my curtains/blinds for me?

We have a spectacular team of in-house curtain and blind makers and can offer very competitive pricing on this service. You will soon be able to order direct from our website but in the meantime please get in touch if you would like a quote. We make thousands of pairs of curtains and blinds a year and would love the chance to make yours too.

Can I request samples?

On every fabric page is a link to purchase a sample. You can order as many as you like however we do reserve the right to limit the number of samples per customer.

Are all of your fabrics in stock?

We keep a large amount of stock in our warehouse but unfortunately not everything is available immediately. Our current lead time is shown on our delivery page but please get in touch if you would like to check stock.

I've seen a fabric elsewhere, can you get it for me?

Almost certainly. We have great relationships with almost all of the UK’s fabric design and manufacturing companies. Simply request a fabric and we’ll get back to you with our best price.

Can I use your fabrics for upholstery?

All of our fabrics are furnishing fabrics so many of them are suitable for some level of upholstery. Check the product information for a guide on suitability. For an accurate rub test please get in touch.

What does light, general, and heavy upholstery mean?

The upholstery grade is based on a test called the “Martindale Rub Test” which is simply a measurement of the amount of abrasion the fabric can withstand before yarns begin to break.

Light Upholstery fabrics have a rub test of approximately 15,000-25,000. You could use these fabrics for dining room chairs and decorative furniture.

General upholstery fabrics have a rub test of approximately 25,000-35,000. These fabrics are suitable for everyday use on sofas and armchairs.

Heavy upholstery fabrics have rub tests over 35,000 and sometimes all the way up to 100,000 and beyond. These fabrics are suitable for all applications including commercial usage in high use areas like hotel lobbies,

How wide are the fabrics?

Most fabrics are approximately 54″ (140cm) wide as per the industry standard. However some fabrics are woven on wider looms up to 300cm wide. These fabrics are very useful as curtains require fewer joins and they often represent better value for money.

For information on extra wide and double width fabrics see our Double Width category.

Remember, you can always get in touch if you need any help calculating fabric quantities.

My fabric is flawed, can I return it?

Please visit our returns page and fill in the returns form. Provided there is a genuine flaw, the fabric has not been processed in any way, and you have informed us immediately after delivery we will process your replacement as soon as possible.

Are your fabrics fire retardent (FR)?

Some fabrics are FR as standard, please check the product information tabs for your particular fabric to see if this is the case.

If you require your fabric to be FR’d we can treat almost all of our fabrics before sending them to you. Please get in touch with your exact specifications and we can supply you with a quote for this service.

Are your fabrics washable?

The large majority of our fabrics are dry clean only. However some fabrics are washable or have specific instructions. Please contact us if you would like us to check a particular fabric.

Workroom & Accessories

What's the difference between oilcloth and PVC coated?

The terms “oilcloth” and “PVC coated” are used to refer to the same thing. All of our wipeable tablecloth fabrics are 100% cotton fabrics treated with a PVC coating.

How wide are your oilcloths?

All of our wipeable tablecloths are made from standard 137cm wide fabrics. However the treatment process shrinks these cloths slightly and the finished width is normally about 135cm, though this can vary by a few centimetres.

Are oilcloths waterproof? Can you use them outside?

Our oilcloths / PVC coated fabrics are “wipeable”, this is not the same as waterproof. Stains and spillages need to be dealt with immediately or they will permeate the surface and ruin the cloth underneath. They are not waterproof and shouldn’t be left outside.

What size cushion inner should I buy?

We recommend sizing up for cushion inners to give extra fullness.

For example: If your cover measures 17″ x 17″ then we would suggest an 18″ x 18″ pad.

Does PVC / Oilcloth crease?

Creases will drop out of PVC over time. However we send all our oilcloth orders rolled to eliminate as much creasing as possible.
